Jane Eyre was never my favourite book, but having watched this mini I have seen it in a new light. They toned down the religious self-righteousness and implanted a more loving and modern side to Jane’s personality. This however does not compromise the original character but rather adds something special to her.
Ruth Wilson (Jane Eyre) gives a top performance in her first ‘big’ role out of acting school. This role differs so greatly from her other known role as the coquettish Jewel Diamond (‘Suburban Shootout’) and will be somebody to keep an eye on in the future. Toby Stephens (Maggie Smith’s son) perfectly portrays the complexities of the troubled Mr Rochester whilst managing to interject a sense of sarcastic humour into the character.
As a viewer you are totally immersed in their love story which still comes across as fresh, regardless of how many times you watch it (I’m up to 5 times, lol)
An incredible 4 hours that will keep you riveted to the screen.
Jane is played by newcomer Ruth Wilson - her innocence to acting has been well utilised and she is very believable in the part. Rochester is played in true Bronte fashion - initally deep and dark and gradually revealing a warm and complex character - by the rather sigh-provoking Toby Stephens.
The acting is truly top notch and you find yourself engaging fully with the characters. A strong supporting cast tops it off and I can see this will become the definitive Jane Eyre for the majority of viewers.
Following the book quite closely (well, as much as is possible in 4 hours) it is a superb and passionate adaptation that modern audiences will appreciate.
The cinematography is brilliant - from detailed indoor shots to widesweeping vistas.
A nice little set of extras including a commentary for episodes 1 & 4, and an interview with the writer, director and main actors.
If you liked the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, you will LOVE Jane Eyre. (P&P will seem so light and fluffy in comparison with the very substantial JE).
This is sure to become a favourite and is defintely one to watch again and again.
