Formed in 2006, this is the second release from Melbourne-band Potential Falcon. ‘Wings on fire’ comprises ten songs, ranging from up-tempo indie rock to seriously down tempo alt-country. Most of them are about love, failed relationships and alcohol, usually all three at once. In this way ‘Wings on fire’ is like a blender, taking all of life’s little emotional turning points and pureeing them into a tasty Daiquiri.
Featuring members from Aleks and the Ramps and Plastic Palace Alice, Potential Falcon are made up of Simon Connoly (guitar, vocals), Huw Murdoch (guitar), Donovan Martin (drums, vocals), Joseph Foley (bass, vocals) and Hugo Temby (keys, guitar, vocals).
‘Wings on fire’ was mostly recorded in Melbourne in mid to late 2008 thanks to some funding from Arts Victoria’s funding program. Initial live tracking took place at Eastern Bloc studios in Hawthorn, with the band producing and Simon at the engineering helm. Overdubs of guitar, keyboards, horns, strings and vocals were laid down at various locales across the city; usually on very gratefully borrowed equipment in what has become the norm for most independent bands. Indie super- producer Wayne Connoly mixed the recordings at Alberts studios in Sydney and then finally mastered by John Ruberto at Crystal Mastering in Melbourne.
