The Wolf Chronicles tells the story of how wolves became dogs - from the wolf's point of view. The Wolf Chronicles was inspired by the scientific theory of co-evolution - the idea that wolves, and later dogs, made humans the dominant species on the planet by teaching us how to hunt co-operatively, hold territories and form complex societies.
Promise of the Wolves begins 14,000 years ago in what is now southern Europe, and follows the adventures of Kaala, a spirited young she-wolf who is destined to bring wolf and human clans together. Born of a forbidden mixed-blood litter and narrowly escaping the fate of her executed brother and sisters, the orphaned Kaala is allowed to join the Swift River wolf pack where she must fight to prove herself and earn her place in the pack.
But when Kaala rescues a human child from drowning, and begins hunting and playing with humans, she risks expulsion from her pack and banishment from her home in the Wide Valley. Unwittingly, she has set in train a series of events which threatens the very survival of her species - and perhaps of all humankind. Kaala’s story is told in parallel with that of Lydda, a legendary wolf who - in a time long past - brought humans and wolves together with dire results.
