Description:
Formed in LA in 2002, Midnight Movies spawned fairly typically when Gena Olivier and Larry Schemel found each other via dual wanted ads, later that year they added Jason Hammons to the line up and Midnight Movies were complete.
During the 90’s Larry was in various bands on Seattle’s grunge scene. His sister Patty was the drummer in the final incarnation of the seminal female band Hole and her friendship with Courtney led to Larry co-writing Courtney’s debut solo single ‘Mono’ with Courtney, Patty and Linda Perry.
Over the past two years, Midnight Movies have grown to be one of the most extraordinary and unique fixtures on the LA music scene. In May of 2003, they were nominated for Best New Artist at the L.A. Weekly Music Awards and in 2004 graduated to a nomination for Best Pop/Rock band. The band was highlighted at the beginning of ’04 in NME as one of the key bands from LA to watch out for.
‘Midnight Movies’ is the band’s debut full-length album. The international edition of the album is expanded, with the bonus track ‘Breathing In Dust’ (as recorded for KCRW in Los Angeles) and an enhanced section that features the promo video for ‘Mirage’ and rehearsal footage of ‘Persimmon Tree’. The band came to the UK in November for a run of 5 blistering live dates in London, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow and will return in Feb/Mar ’05. They have toured with Clinic, The Von Bondies and Luna, and have been compared to Stereolab, Portishead, Spiritualized and My Bloody Valentine.
