Description:
Three scruffy punks, with nice shoes, daring to push the envelope and challenge the mainstream, armed with shitty broken equipment... ready to take on the world…’
That was how Gerling described themselves in mid-2003 shortly after completing their third album BadBlood!!! The release, dark and dense, combined Gerling’s love of electronic and guitar music with the punk aesthetic that they had been reared on. BadBlood!!! spawned the live anthems Get Activated, Who’s Ya Daddy?, Whacked Light and radio hit In The City that introduced the band’s first foray into live horn sections.
On the back of the release they hit the road for their most successful tour of Australia – a three month national that saw them play in front of more fan’s than ever before as well as heading to New Zealand for a highly successful run through both islands for the first time in their career. Further releases in Japan and the USA enabled Gerling to pack their bags for a northern hemisphere tour that started with a two week jaunt from Atlanta through Florida and up to NYC with punk rock burlesquers the Suicide Girls and culminated with a further 20 shows across the top of the ‘States and down into Texas.
4 is, unsurprisingly enough, the fourth full length album from Gerling and it sees them follow the same path as they have after each of the first three albums – another new direction. Sure, it combines Gerling’s love of electro and sequencing with live instruments but a quick listen to the first two tracks that have been made available from 4 (Turning The Screws & Good Timing) reveals a stronger and more even pop sensibility with those famous massive Gerling hooks that will certainly be commanding attention in 2006. Dig a little deeper into the album and some heavily rhythmic gems (Gator and Big Game) leap out and even a couple of acoustic tracks… Gigantic, anthemic choruses? Just about every other track of course…
Produced by Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon; Ryan Adams; Rufus Wainwright), Gerling's latest album simply titled GERLING 4 melds the analogue & digital recording worlds into one. Recorded & Mixed in Ethan John's private studio in North Hollywood, on a selection of rare vintage gear inherited from his father - which includes the console that was used on The Clash's "Combat Rock" & The Rolling Stones "Beggars Banquet" was then put thru Gerling's laptops, sequences and various other gadgets to produce Gerling's fourth studio album.
